Title: How outgroup social categorization by host country nationals affects expatriate premature return intention?
Abstract:
This study explores how outgroup social categorization by host country nationals (HCNs) affects expatriate intention to terminate assignments prematurely. We theorize that outgroup social categorization by HCNs results in social isolation for expatriates, which in turn triggers expatriates’ early return intention. We draw on social learning theory and recategorization theory to hypothesize that mentoring mitigates the negative consequences associated with social categorization. The hypotheses were supported by the results of analyzing multisource data collected from expatriates and their local co-workers in multinational enterprises operating in China. This study advances expatriate research in relations to HCNs’ social categorization.
