Title: University Students’ Intention towards Technopreneurship: Factors and Challenges
Abstract:
Technopreneurship is considered a new breed of entrepreneurship. Reports showed that youths were not keen in becoming entrepreneurs. Therefore, developing competitive technopreneurs remains as a great challenge in many countries. This speech discusses about university students’ intention in embarking on technopreneurship. Specifically, it discusses the factors affect students’ intention towards technopreneurship. Based on a study conducted in Malaysia, it showed that students exhibited rather acceptable level of intention towards technopreneurship. However, there were ample rooms for increasing the intention among the students. In terms of factors influencing the technoprenuerial intention, information and communication technology (ICT) self-efficacy and individual-level entrepreneurial orientation (IEO) were found to be significant and important. Specifically, there were five factors, namely (i) computer capabilities; (ii) Internet ability; (iii) risk-taking; (iv) proactiveness and (v) innovativeness. Since ICT self-efficacy and IEO could be learned and trained, higher learning institutions (HLIs) are urged to carefully design their technopreneurship courses for the purposes of training and developing competitive young technopreneurs. As for the governmental agencies, their roles are more on providing regulatory and financial supports. Although the roles of HLIs and governmental agencies are clear, they still face various challenges in implementation of strategies.
